Buying a diamond is one of the most significant purchases most people will ever make. In Grand Cayman, knowing the right questions to ask can mean the difference between an extraordinary purchase and a regrettable one.
1. Is this diamond GIA-certified?
The Gemological Institute of America is the world’s most trusted independent diamond grading laboratory. A GIA certificate means the diamond has been assessed by unbiased professionals using standardised scientific methodology. Any answer other than “yes, here is the certificate” should give you pause.
2. Can I see and verify the GIA report number?
Every GIA certificate has a unique report number you can look up independently at gia.edu. A reputable jeweller will be completely comfortable with you doing this on the spot.
3. What are the exact 4Cs of this diamond?
Cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — these should be stated precisely. “Near-colourless” is not a grade. “G colour” is. Insist on exactness.
4. What cut grade does this diamond have?
For round brilliant diamonds, GIA grades cut as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. Cut grade is the single most important factor in how brilliantly a diamond sparkles.
5. Has this diamond been treated in any way?
Fracture-filling and laser drilling are treatments that can improve a diamond’s apparent clarity. GIA certificates disclose treatments. Treated diamonds should be significantly less expensive than untreated ones.
6. What metal is the setting made from, and what purity?
Ask for the purity: 18ct or 14ct gold, or platinum. The difference in quality, durability, and value is significant.
7. Does the price include any tax?
In the Cayman Islands, the answer should always be no — there is no tax. But confirm this explicitly.
8. What is included in the aftercare service?
A quality jeweller will offer complimentary cleaning, prong checking, and rhodium plating (for white gold) for the life of the piece.
9. Can I return or exchange this diamond?
Understand the return and exchange policy before purchasing. A confident jeweller with quality stock will have a clear, fair policy.
10. May I take the diamond into natural light?
The best way to assess a diamond’s brilliance is in natural daylight. A reputable jeweller will encourage this without hesitation.
