The Collection

An Engagement Ring as Considered as the Moment

An engagement ring is the most meaningful purchase most of us will ever make, and choosing it should feel every bit as special as the moment it leads to.

At IDC Cayman, we have helped couples across the Cayman Islands find the ring that says exactly what they mean. Every engagement ring is built around a GIA-certified diamond, crafted in 14-carat or 18-carat gold, and offered entirely free of duty and tax.

Whether you know precisely what you want, or have no idea where to begin, our team will guide you with patience, expertise and absolutely no pressure.

Ring Guide

How to Choose an Engagement Ring

Step 1: Choose the Diamond Shape

The shape of the diamond is the most visible design decision. Round brilliant is the most popular choice worldwide for maximum sparkle. Oval is the most fashionable fancy shape, it looks larger than its carat weight and elongates the finger. Cushion is soft and romantic, pear distinctive and directional, and emerald sophisticated and architectural.

Step 2: Choose the Setting Style

A solitaire puts one diamond centre stage, the most timeless choice. A halo surrounds the centre stone with smaller diamonds for added sparkle and size. A hidden halo tucks diamonds beneath the setting, clean from above. A three-stone ring flanks the centre with two side diamonds, while pavé bands add brilliance along the shoulders.

Step 3: Choose the Metal

14-carat gold is hard-wearing and holds a diamond securely, our most popular choice for engagement rings; 18-carat gold is slightly richer in colour. White gold is rhodium-plated and costs slightly less; yellow and rose gold offer warmth and a contemporary feel.

Step 4: Choose the Diamond Quality

For most rings, a GIA-certified stone graded Excellent or Very Good cut, G-H colour and VS1-VS2 clarity represents outstanding quality for everyday wear. Cut matters most, a well-cut diamond sparkles more than a poorly cut stone of any grade. We review every certificate with you and explain each grade in plain language before you commit.

Questions

Good to Know

How do I choose an engagement ring?
Start with the diamond shape, round brilliant, oval, cushion and pear are the most popular, then choose a setting that suits your partner's lifestyle and aesthetic. A solitaire is timeless; a halo adds perceived size and brilliance; a three-stone ring carries symbolic meaning. 14-carat gold is hard-wearing for everyday wear; 18-carat gold offers a slightly richer colour. Setting a clear budget first lets you focus on the combination of cut, colour, clarity and carat that delivers the most beautiful stone in your range.
What is the most popular engagement ring style?
The round brilliant solitaire remains the most popular style globally, combining the most brilliant diamond shape with a clean, classic setting. Oval solitaires and cushion-cut halos have become extremely popular in recent years, while the three-stone ring is the most popular symbolic choice, representing the past, present and future of a relationship.
What metal is best for an engagement ring, 14-carat or 18-carat gold?
14-carat gold is our most popular choice for engagement rings: hard-wearing, it holds a diamond securely over decades of wear, and it comes in yellow, white and rose. 18-carat gold, slightly richer in colour, is also available. White gold is finished with rhodium for a bright white look, while yellow and rose add warmth. We will help you choose the metal and colour that suits the wearer.
What is the difference between a halo and a hidden halo?
A standard halo features a visible row of small pavé diamonds surrounding the centre stone, fully visible from above. A hidden halo places that row of diamonds underneath the setting, visible from the side and at angles, but not from above, so the ring reads as a clean solitaire from most viewing angles and glimmers with a surprise of diamonds from the side.
What diamond shape is most popular right now?
Oval cut diamonds are currently the most fashionable choice, prized for elongating the finger and looking larger than their carat weight. Round brilliants remain the best-selling shape overall for their maximum brilliance, while cushion and pear shapes are popular for their romantic and distinctive character.
How much should an engagement ring cost?
There is no correct amount. The 'two months' salary' rule was a 20th-century marketing guideline with no basis in jewellery value. The right amount is whatever lets you buy a ring that delights the recipient and carries meaning. A beautifully cut 0.70ct GIA-certified diamond in a considered gold setting can be far more wonderful than a larger but poorly cut stone, our team works with every budget.
Can I design a completely custom engagement ring?
Yes. Bespoke design is one of IDC Cayman's signature services. Starting from a blank page, you work with our atelier in George Town to source the exact diamond and choose the setting, metal and every detail. The process moves from consultation to sketches and CAD renderings to hand fabrication, typically over four to eight weeks.
Are IDC Cayman engagement rings GIA-certified?
Yes. Every significant diamond is independently graded and certified by the Gemological Institute of America, and the certificate is reviewed with you before purchase, complete confidence that the stone is exactly as represented. IDC Cayman does not use in-house graded diamonds for significant stones.
What is the advantage of buying an engagement ring in Grand Cayman?
The Cayman Islands levies zero import duty and zero sales tax on diamonds and jewellery. For UK and European buyers that is a saving equivalent to 20%+ VAT; for Australians, 10% GST; for Americans, the equivalent of their state sales tax. The saving is realised at purchase, with no refund paperwork or customs process.
How long does a bespoke engagement ring take to make?
Typically four to eight weeks from approval of the final design to the completed ring, beginning with a free private consultation, then design sketches and CAD renderings, then hand fabrication in our George Town atelier. Rush timelines can sometimes be accommodated depending on complexity, begin early if you have a proposal date in mind.
