Loose Diamonds

Certified Brilliance

GIA-certified loose diamonds in every shape and size — expertly guided, entirely tax-free.

IDC Cayman GIA-certified diamonds are independently graded loose diamonds available in Grand Cayman's premier jewellery boutique in George Town. Every diamond sold by IDC Cayman carries a certificate issued by the Gemological Institute of America, confirming its cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight to an internationally recognised standard. Available shapes include round brilliant, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, princess, emerald, radiant, and asscher cuts across a wide range of carat weights. Because the Cayman Islands charges zero import duty and zero sales tax, buying a GIA-certified diamond at IDC Cayman represents a saving of 20% or more compared with equivalent UK or European retail prices, and a meaningful saving versus most US retailers. Loose diamonds can be purchased independently or paired with a bespoke setting designed and crafted in-house.

A diamond is forever — so it should be chosen with complete confidence, and complete information.

At IDC Cayman, every loose diamond is independently graded by the Gemological Institute of America, the world's most respected diamond authority. That means the stone you fall in love with is exactly the stone described on its certificate — nothing more, nothing less. Our experts will sit with you, diamonds in hand, and explain precisely what you are looking at, so you buy with knowledge rather than guesswork. And as a Cayman Islands jeweller, every diamond is offered free of duty and tax.

Understanding the 4Cs

Every diamond is graded on four qualities. Cut is the most important — it determines how a diamond gathers and returns light as sparkle and fire. Colour grades how close a white diamond comes to truly colourless. Clarity describes the tiny natural marks within the stone, and carat measures its weight.

The art of choosing well is balancing these four against your budget. Often a small step in colour or clarity is invisible to the eye but meaningful to the price — and that is exactly where our guidance saves you money without compromising beauty.

Diamond Education

The Complete Guide to Buying a Diamond

Everything you need to know about the 4Cs, diamond shapes, and how to choose the right stone — explained by the team at IDC Cayman.

Cut — The Most Important of the 4Cs

A diamond's cut determines how effectively it reflects light — and therefore how brilliant, fiery, and scintillating it appears. Cut is the only one of the 4Cs that is entirely determined by human skill rather than nature. The GIA grades round brilliant cut diamonds from Excellent to Poor. An Excellent or Very Good cut grade ensures the diamond captures and returns light powerfully through its crown. At IDC Cayman, we recommend a minimum of Very Good cut — and favour Excellent-cut stones wherever budget allows. A well-cut diamond of modest colour or clarity will always outshine a poorly cut stone of higher grades.

Colour — Graded D to Z

The GIA colour scale runs from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow or brown). D, E, and F are colourless — the differences between them are detectable only under laboratory conditions. G, H, I, and J are near-colourless and represent excellent value: the diamond looks bright white in a ring, but costs meaningfully less than a D colour. For most clients at IDC Cayman, G or H colour in a white metal setting is the sweet spot — and I or J colour looks stunning set in yellow or rose gold, where the warm metal complements the stone perfectly.

Clarity — From Flawless to Included

Clarity grades the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface characteristics) on the GIA scale: Flawless, Internally Flawless, VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, I1/I2/I3. The key practical threshold is eye-cleanliness — whether inclusions are visible to the naked eye in normal wear. Most VS1 and VS2 diamonds are eye-clean, as are many SI1 stones in round brilliants. At IDC Cayman, we examine every stone individually and will only recommend an SI clarity grade where the specific stone is genuinely eye-clean.

Carat — Size vs Weight

One carat equals 0.2 grams. Carat weight directly affects price — larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive, all other factors equal. But carat weight and visual size are not the same thing. The shape and cut of a diamond determine how it spreads across the finger. Elongated shapes — oval, pear, marquise — tend to look larger than rounds of the same carat weight. A well-cut 0.90ct oval can appear visually identical to a 1.00ct round. At IDC Cayman, we can show you comparable stones in different shapes and carat weights so you can find the best visual impact for your budget.

Diamond Shapes: Which is Right for You?

Round Brilliant — the most popular shape worldwide, maximises sparkle, suits any setting. Oval — elongates the finger, looks larger than its carat weight, extremely popular in current engagement rings. Cushion — soft rounded square, romantic and vintage-inspired, excellent brilliance. Pear — unique teardrop shape, elegant on fingers of all lengths, lengthening effect. Emerald — step-cut rectangle, hall-of-mirrors effect, architectural and sophisticated. Princess — square brilliant, modern and geometric. Marquise — elongated pointed oval, the largest-looking shape per carat weight. Radiant — rectangular brilliant cut, high sparkle with a modern outline. Asscher — square step cut, vintage Art Deco character. IDC Cayman carries all nine shapes in GIA-certified stones.

Questions

Good to Know

What are the 4Cs of a diamond?
The 4Cs are the four characteristics used to grade every diamond worldwide: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. The system was created and standardised by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and is now the universal language of diamond quality. Cut refers to how well the diamond's facets interact with light — it is the most human-controlled of the four characteristics. Colour is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown), with D–F considered colourless and G–J near-colourless. Clarity grades the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface characteristics) on a scale from Flawless to Included. Carat is the unit of weight: one carat equals 0.2 grams.
Which of the 4Cs matters most when buying a diamond?
Cut is widely considered the most important of the 4Cs, because it has the greatest impact on a diamond's visual appearance. A well-cut diamond — one graded Excellent or Very Good by the GIA — reflects light precisely through its crown, producing the brightness, fire, and scintillation that make a diamond beautiful. A poorly cut diamond will appear dull regardless of how high its colour or clarity grade is. After cut, colour and clarity are broadly equal in importance, with personal preference guiding the balance. Carat weight is a matter of budget and desired size.
What is a GIA certificate and why does it matter?
A GIA certificate — formally called a GIA Diamond Grading Report — is an independent, scientific assessment of a diamond's 4Cs issued by the Gemological Institute of America. The GIA is the world's most respected diamond authority, with no financial interest in the sale of the diamond it grades. The certificate records the diamond's exact cut grade, colour grade, clarity grade, carat weight, dimensions, fluorescence, and any identifying characteristics. It provides complete buyer confidence: the stone you purchase is precisely as described, independently verified. At IDC Cayman, every significant diamond carries a GIA certificate.
What is the difference between diamond cut and diamond shape?
Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets are proportioned and aligned to reflect light — this is entirely a matter of craftsmanship and determines how bright and sparkly the diamond appears. Shape refers to the diamond's outline as viewed from above: round, oval, pear, cushion, princess, emerald, marquise, radiant, and asscher are the most popular shapes. Shape is a matter of personal preference. A round brilliant, for example, can be cut Excellent or Poor; the cut grade measures quality within a given shape.
What diamond cut gives the most sparkle?
The round brilliant cut is widely regarded as the most brilliant diamond shape, as it is specifically engineered with 57 or 58 facets arranged to maximise the reflection and refraction of light. Modern round brilliants cut to Excellent grade by the GIA produce the greatest brightness, fire (coloured light dispersion), and scintillation (sparkle when the diamond moves) of any shape. Among fancy shapes, the oval, pear, and cushion cuts also achieve high levels of brilliance when well-cut.
What is the difference between diamond clarity grades?
Diamond clarity is graded on the GIA scale from Flawless (FL) — no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification — through to Included (I1, I2, I3), where inclusions are visible to the naked eye. The grades in between, from most to least clean, are: Internally Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2), Very Slightly Included (VS1, VS2), and Slightly Included (SI1, SI2). For most buyers, a VS1 or VS2 diamond offers excellent value — inclusions are not visible to the naked eye but the grade does not carry the premium of VVS or Flawless.
What does diamond colour grading mean?
Diamond colour is graded on the GIA's D-to-Z scale, where D is completely colourless and Z shows visible yellow or brown tinting. The grading is done by comparing the diamond against master stones under controlled lighting. D, E, and F are colourless — any colour difference between them is invisible to the naked eye and detectable only by a trained gemologist. G, H, I, and J are near-colourless — an excellent balance of quality and value for most buyers. K and below begin to show warmth visible to the naked eye. The best colour choice depends on the metal: white gold and platinum pair well with D–H; yellow or rose gold pairs beautifully with I–K, as the metal's warmth masks any colour in the stone.
What is a carat weight in diamonds?
A diamond carat is a unit of weight equal to 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams. The term carat (abbreviated ct) comes from the carob seed, historically used as a counterweight on balance scales. One carat is divided into 100 points, so a 0.50ct diamond is described as a 50-point diamond. Carat weight directly affects price — all other quality factors being equal, a larger diamond is rarer and therefore more expensive. However, two diamonds of identical carat weight can look very different in size depending on their cut and shape.
Does a bigger carat weight always mean a bigger-looking diamond?
Not necessarily. While carat weight measures mass, the visual size of a diamond depends on its cut proportions and shape. A shallow-cut round diamond may spread wider than a well-cut stone of the same carat weight, but it will sacrifice brilliance. Elongated shapes — oval, pear, marquise, and emerald — tend to look larger than round stones of the same carat weight because they cover more surface area on the finger. A well-cut 0.90ct oval can appear as large as a 1.00ct round brilliant.
What diamond shapes look the biggest for their carat weight?
Elongated shapes consistently appear largest relative to their carat weight. The oval cut is one of the most popular choices for this reason — it looks significantly larger than a round of the same weight. The marquise cut has the highest surface area per carat of any shape, making it appear very large on the finger. The pear shape also creates a lengthening, enlarging illusion. Among non-elongated shapes, the cushion and radiant cuts tend to retain more weight in their depth, so they can look slightly smaller than their carat weight suggests.
What is a brilliant cut diamond?
A brilliant cut diamond is any diamond shaped and faceted to maximise light return. The round brilliant — 57 or 58 facets arranged in a specific pattern — is the most common and the benchmark against which all other cuts are measured. Other brilliant-cut shapes include oval, pear, marquise, cushion, and radiant. The term 'brilliant' refers to the cutting style, not the shape. Brilliant cuts feature a crown of kite-shaped and triangular facets above the girdle and a pavilion of similar facets below, all angled precisely to reflect light back through the table.
What is an emerald cut diamond?
The emerald cut is a rectangular step-cut diamond with cropped corners and a series of long, parallel facets arranged in a staircase pattern. Unlike brilliant cuts, the emerald cut does not maximise sparkle — instead, it produces a distinctive 'hall of mirrors' effect, with broad flashes of light and dark that give the stone great elegance and depth. The emerald cut is very transparent, meaning inclusions and colour are more visible than in a brilliant-cut stone. Buyers choosing an emerald cut typically prioritise VS clarity or better, and G colour or above.
What is the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond?
Natural diamonds are formed deep in the earth over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure, then brought to the surface through volcanic activity. They are mined, cut, and polished. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds but are created in a laboratory in weeks using high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD) processes. Because they are created in controlled conditions, lab-grown diamonds are generally less expensive than natural stones of comparable quality. The key long-term difference is rarity: natural diamonds are finite; lab-grown diamonds can be produced indefinitely, which affects their long-term resale value.
What is a conflict-free or ethical diamond?
A conflict-free diamond is one that has not been used to finance armed conflict against a government. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), established in 2003, was designed to prevent the trade in 'conflict diamonds' or 'blood diamonds' by requiring member countries to certify that rough diamond exports are conflict-free. Beyond the Kimberley Process, responsible sourcing frameworks now encompass environmental and labour standards. At IDC Cayman, diamonds are sourced through established industry channels with responsible sourcing commitments.
How do I tell if a diamond is real?
The most reliable way to verify a diamond is to have it assessed by a qualified gemologist or a reputable diamond grading laboratory. A GIA grading report provides authoritative independent verification. Visual checks include looking for a hallmark or laser inscription on the girdle (most GIA-certified diamonds have their report number laser-inscribed). Simple home tests — the fog test, the float test — can distinguish diamond from glass but not from moissanite or other simulants. A professional thermal conductivity tester can distinguish diamond from moissanite.
What is a diamond's fluorescence and does it matter?
Diamond fluorescence is the visible light that some diamonds emit when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, most commonly a blue glow. The GIA grades fluorescence as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. In most diamonds, fluorescence has no detectable effect on appearance in normal lighting. In rare cases, Very Strong blue fluorescence can make a diamond appear slightly hazy or milky in direct sunlight. In lower colour grades (I–M), Medium blue fluorescence can actually make the diamond appear whiter. Fluorescence is recorded on GIA certificates and is largely a matter of personal preference.
What are diamond inclusions?
Diamond inclusions are natural internal characteristics formed during the diamond's growth in the earth. They include crystals (tiny minerals trapped inside), feathers (small fractures), clouds (clusters of microscopic pinpoints), needles (thin elongated crystals), and twinning wisps (irregular planes of inclusions). Inclusions are used in clarity grading. A VS1 diamond has inclusions that are minor and difficult to see under 10x magnification; an SI1 has inclusions that are noticeable under magnification but generally not visible to the naked eye.
What is the best diamond clarity for an engagement ring?
For most buyers, VS1 or VS2 clarity offers the best balance of quality and value in an engagement ring. At these grades, inclusions are not visible to the naked eye — the diamond appears perfectly clean in everyday wear — but the stone does not carry the significant price premium of VVS or Flawless grades. Buyers with larger budgets often step up to VVS2 or VVS1 for peace of mind, while buyers prioritising size or cut often choose SI1, where inclusions remain invisible to the naked eye in a well-cut round brilliant.
What colour grade should I look for in a diamond?
For round brilliant cuts set in white gold or platinum, a colour grade of G or H offers excellent value — the diamond appears colourless to the naked eye but costs meaningfully less than D–F. For fancy shapes like oval, cushion, and pear, G–H is also recommended, though some buyers prefer F or above as fancy shapes can show colour more readily. For diamonds set in yellow or rose gold, I or J colour works beautifully — the warm metal masks any hint of warmth in the stone. D–F colour is ideal for those who prioritise absolute colourlessness regardless of setting.
How much should I spend on a diamond?
There is no universal rule for diamond spend. The widely cited guideline of two months' salary is a marketing construction with no gemological basis. The right budget is the one that allows you to purchase a well-cut, GIA-certified diamond that delights the recipient, in a setting and style they love. A well-cut 0.70ct G/VS2 round brilliant in a platinum solitaire can be just as beautiful — and more meaningful — than a poorly cut 1.50ct in a lower-quality setting. At IDC Cayman, we guide every client towards the best stone and setting for their individual budget.
Why buy a GIA-certified diamond rather than one graded in-house?
Independent GIA grading is the gold standard because the GIA has no financial interest in the sale of the diamond. In-house grading — where the retailer grades their own stones — creates an obvious conflict of interest: there is no independent check on the grades assigned. GIA graders are trained to strict scientific standards and grade tens of millions of diamonds per year. A GIA certificate means the cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight have been verified by an impartial expert. At IDC Cayman, every significant diamond is GIA-certified — we do not sell significant stones without independent certification.
What diamond shapes does IDC Cayman carry?
IDC Cayman carries GIA-certified loose diamonds in all major shapes: round brilliant, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, princess, emerald, radiant, and asscher. Rounds are the most in-demand and are available across the widest range of carat weights, colours, and clarity grades. Fancy shapes — particularly ovals and cushions — are especially popular for engagement rings. Specific stones can also be sourced on request if a particular combination of shape, carat, colour, and clarity is required.
Can I see a diamond's GIA certificate before buying?
Yes. Every significant diamond at IDC Cayman is accompanied by its GIA Diamond Grading Report, which can be reviewed before purchase. The GIA report number is also laser-inscribed on the girdle of most certified stones, allowing the certificate to be matched to the physical diamond. At IDC Cayman, transparency is fundamental — we encourage clients to read and understand the certificate, and our team is happy to explain every detail of what each grade means in practice.
Is it cheaper to buy a diamond in Grand Cayman than at home?
Yes, significantly. The Cayman Islands levies zero import duty and zero sales tax on diamonds and jewellery. For a UK buyer, this is a saving equivalent to 20% VAT on the full purchase price. For an Australian buyer, it is 10% GST. For European buyers, the saving ranges from 19% to 27% depending on their home country. For American buyers, the saving is the applicable state sales tax — typically 4% to 10.25%. On a meaningful diamond purchase, this represents a real and substantial financial saving with no compromise on quality or certification.
Can I buy a loose diamond at IDC Cayman and have it set into a ring?
Yes. IDC Cayman carries an inventory of GIA-certified loose diamonds in all major shapes and carat weights. You can choose your stone — reviewing the GIA certificate and comparing options — and then have it set into a ring from our collection or through a completely bespoke design created in our George Town atelier. This approach gives you full control over both the diamond and the setting, and is how many of our engagement ring clients choose to build their ring. There is no additional charge for pairing a loose stone with a setting from our collection.
