Tanzanite

Tanzanite Jewelry in Grand Cayman

Violet-blue tanzanite set in 14-carat and 18-carat gold, rarer than diamond and priced tax-free.

Rarer Than Diamond

One Source on Earth

Tanzanite is a violet-blue gemstone found in only one place on earth, near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which makes it far rarer than diamond. The colour shifts between blue and violet depending on the light and the angle, and the finest stones hold a deep blue with a violet flash rather than a washed pale lilac.

It is softer than sapphire, so tanzanite jewelry looks its best in earrings, pendants and occasion rings rather than a ring worn every day. Where a client wants a tanzanite ring for regular wear, we set it in a protective bezel or a raised surround so the stone is shielded at the edges.

Because the deposit is finite and there is only one of it, good tanzanite has become harder to source in larger sizes. We buy on colour first: a smaller stone with real depth of blue will always look better set than a larger pale one.

How We Set It

Tanzanite Pieces

Tanzanite Pendants

The setting that shows the colour best and keeps a softer stone out of harm's way. Our most popular tanzanite piece.

Tanzanite Rings

Best as occasion rings, or set protectively for regular wear. Violet-blue reads beautifully against both white and yellow gold.

Tanzanite Earrings

Matched pairs selected for consistent colour, in studs and drops, 14k or 18k gold.

With Diamonds

A halo of small white diamonds lifts the blue and adds brightness without competing with the colour.

Questions

Good to Know

What is tanzanite?
Tanzanite is a violet-blue gemstone found in only one place on earth, near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which makes it far rarer than diamond. It is softer than sapphire, so tanzanite jewelry looks its best in earrings, pendants and occasion rings rather than a ring worn every day.
Is tanzanite suitable for an engagement ring?
It can be, with the right setting. Tanzanite is softer than sapphire, so a tanzanite engagement ring wants a bezel or a protected setting and a wearer who takes it off for anything rough. If you want the violet-blue look with everyday durability, a blue sapphire is the harder-wearing alternative and we will show you both.
How do I judge tanzanite quality?
Colour, before anything else. The best stones are a deep blue with a violet flash that holds under different lighting; pale, greyish or washed-out stones cost far less for good reason. Size matters much less than saturation, and a smaller vivid stone will out-perform a larger pale one once it is set.
Where can I buy tanzanite in Grand Cayman?
At our George Town showroom, a short walk from the cruise pier, with no duty and no sales tax on the price. We hold loose tanzanite as well as finished pieces, so you can pick the stone and have it set here.
