Sapphire is the most popular colored gemstone we set, and for good reason. At 9 on the Mohs hardness scale it is second only to diamond, so a sapphire ring holds up to everyday wear in a way that softer coloured stones simply do not.

Most people picture deep blue, but sapphires also come in pink, teal, yellow, green and the rare pink-orange padparadscha. That range is why sapphire has become the default choice for a coloured engagement ring: you can have real colour without giving up durability.

We set sapphire in 14-carat and 18-carat white, yellow and rose gold, as solitaires, in diamond halos, and as the side stones in three-stone rings. Colour is the first thing we buy on, since a vivid medium-blue stone will always out-perform a larger dark or greyish one once it is set.

Is sapphire hard enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. At 9 on the Mohs hardness scale sapphire is second only to diamond, so it stands up to daily wear better than any other coloured gemstone. That durability is the main reason sapphire engagement rings have become so popular.

What colours do sapphires come in?

Far more than blue. Sapphires occur in pink, teal, green, yellow, purple and the rare pink-orange padparadscha, as well as colourless. Only red corundum is called something else: that is ruby.

How do I judge sapphire quality?

Colour first. Look for a vivid, evenly distributed hue in a medium tone. Very dark stones lose their life once set, and pale or greyish stones look washed out. Clarity matters less in sapphire than in diamond, as long as inclusions do not affect brightness.

Are sapphires cheaper in the Cayman Islands?

There is no import duty and no sales tax on jewellery here, so the quoted price is the final price. On a coloured stone, where the gem is the bulk of the cost, that is a real saving against the same specification at home.
