Lab Grown and Moissanite

Lab Grown Diamonds in Grand Cayman

Lab grown diamonds and moissanite, explained honestly, certified, and priced tax-free in George Town.

The Straight Answer

Same Carbon, Different Price

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon crystal, same hardness at 10 on the Mohs scale, same optical behaviour, and it is graded on the same colour and clarity scales by the same laboratories. The difference is that it was grown in a matter of weeks rather than found, which is why it costs substantially less per carat.

Moissanite is not a diamond. It is silicon carbide, slightly softer at around 9.25, and it throws noticeably more rainbow fire than a diamond does. Some people prefer that look and some do not, which is why it is worth seeing the two next to each other rather than deciding from a screen.

We sell both, and we will tell you plainly what each one is. If you want the largest stone your budget allows, lab grown gets you there. If resale and long-term value matter to you, a mined diamond still behaves differently in the market. That is a decision about what you want, not a question with one right answer.

Compared

Lab Grown, Mined and Moissanite

Lab Grown Diamond

Chemically and optically a diamond, hardness 10, graded by the same labs. Typically a fraction of the price of an equivalent mined stone.

Mined Diamond

Formed over geological time. Holds its position in the resale market differently, and still what most people mean by a diamond.

Moissanite

Silicon carbide, not diamond. Hardness about 9.25, with markedly more rainbow flash. The most affordable of the three by a wide margin.

Questions

Good to Know

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical properties as a mined diamond. It is graded on the same colour and clarity scales. The only difference is how it formed, and that is disclosed on the certificate.
How much cheaper are lab grown diamonds?
Substantially, and the gap has widened as production has scaled. For the same carat weight, colour and clarity, a lab grown stone is generally a fraction of the mined price, which is why people often use lab grown to reach a larger centre stone than their budget would otherwise allow. We will quote both side by side.
What is the difference between moissanite and a diamond?
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material entirely. It is slightly softer than diamond at about 9.25 on the Mohs scale, still hard enough for daily wear, and it disperses light more strongly so it shows more rainbow flash. Whether that reads as brilliant or as obviously not-diamond is a matter of taste, and it is best judged in person.
Do lab grown diamonds hold their value?
Less predictably than mined diamonds. Production costs have fallen year on year, which puts downward pressure on prices for existing stones. If resale is part of your thinking, that is worth weighing. If you are buying a ring to wear rather than to trade, it matters much less.
Are lab grown diamonds certified?
Yes. The lab grown stones we sell come with a report from a recognised laboratory stating the growth method along with the colour, clarity and cut grades, so nothing about the stone's origin is ambiguous.
