Pearl Jewelry in Grand Cayman

Necklaces, studs and drops, with professional restringing in our George Town workshop.

The Organic Gem

Judged on Lustre, Not Size

Pearls are organic, grown rather than mined, and they are judged differently from any faceted stone. Lustre is the whole game: the depth and sharpness of the reflection on the surface. A smaller pearl with deep lustre will always look finer than a larger chalky one.

After lustre comes surface cleanliness, then shape, then size. We set pearls as studs and drops in 14-carat and 18-carat gold and string necklaces to order, knotted between each pearl so a broken strand loses one pearl rather than all of them.

Pearls need restringing periodically, since silk stretches and absorbs oils. That is workshop work we do here, along with re-knotting and clasp replacement.

Questions

Good to Know

How do I judge pearl quality?
Lustre first: look for a sharp, deep reflection rather than a chalky surface. Then surface cleanliness, then how round the pearl is, and only then size. A smaller pearl with excellent lustre beats a larger dull one every time.
Do pearls need restringing?
Yes, periodically. Silk thread stretches and absorbs skin oils and perfume over time. We restring and re-knot pearls in our George Town workshop, knotting between each pearl so a break costs you one pearl rather than the strand.
How should I care for pearls?
Put them on last and take them off first, so perfume and hairspray never touch them. Wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing, and store them flat rather than hanging, which stretches the thread.
