What is alexandrite?

Alexandrite is a rare colour-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. It appears green in daylight and red or purplish-red under warm incandescent light. Fine natural alexandrite is one of the rarest coloured gemstones in existence.

Why is alexandrite so expensive?

Because good material barely exists. Strong colour change in a clean stone of any real size is exceptionally rare, so price per carat rises very steeply with both size and the completeness of the colour shift.
