Turquoise Jewelry in Grand Cayman

The blue that matches the water, set in 14-carat and 18-carat gold.

Turquoise

The Island Blue of Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the oldest gemstones in human use and still one of the most recognisable, an opaque robin's-egg blue often veined with fine dark matrix. On an island where the water is exactly that colour, it needs very little explaining.

It is a softer, porous stone, so it wants respect rather than caution: keep it away from oils, perfume and ultrasonic cleaners, and set it protectively in rings. Pendants, earrings and bezel-set rings are where turquoise does its best work.

We set turquoise in 14-carat and 18-carat gold, and the warmth of yellow gold against that blue is the classic pairing for good reason. Because the stone is bought on the character of its colour and matrix rather than on a grade, it is worth choosing in person.

Questions

Good to Know

Is turquoise durable enough for a ring?
With a protective setting, yes. Turquoise is softer and more porous than most gemstones, so we bezel-set it in rings and advise removing it before anything rough. In pendants and earrings it needs very little thought.
How should I care for turquoise?
Keep it away from oils, lotions, perfume and household chemicals, all of which can discolour a porous stone. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and put it on after perfume rather than before.
What is the matrix in turquoise?
The fine dark veining running through the stone, left by the host rock. It is not a flaw. Some buyers want a clean even blue and others prefer strong matrix for the character, and price reflects demand rather than one being better.
